Vladimir Ilich Lenin-

(1870-1924)
Lenin, was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1917 to his death in 1924. Lenin, good or bad, was a powerful man. Vladimir started out as a journalist and a scholar who was overenthusiastic about Marxism and believed in its tactics to run a society. He began the group called the Bolsheviks and started the Bolshevik revolution. In 1917 he seized power and was the first leader of Russia's soviet state, paving the path for his successor, Joseph Stalin. During his ruling he first ended the war with Germany. He was totalitarian and crushed his opposition when anticommunists or the white side had an uprising throwing Russia into a civil war. The white side were rebels who wanted to hold on to their freedom, but they did not succeed. The economy of Russia was poor and many died due to this during Lenin's reign, so even though he was against it, he started using a nearly capitalist economy. He suffered from strokes in 1922 and died two years later. He did not want Stalin to take his place, but he did. Lenin is famous for his evil ways. He is known as a mass murderer, starting the first concentration camps, which was later used by the Nazis. He would use mass executions to kill men women and children, and the state of the country was so bad during his lead that alone left over 27 million people dead. His lead gave inspiration to leaders like Hitler and Mao Tse-tung.

Allusion- In the book there is a character with a similar name to Lenin. That person is Lenina Crowne. Lenina is a character that is a subject of the Brave New World society. Lenin's views and the Lenina and her civilization's veiws are similar. Lenin was a very radical communist who supported Karl Marx's way of life. Communism involves everyone working for the country which is really similar to the Brave New World's system of stability and castes. Vladimir Ilech Lenin did not like religion. Lenina and everyone in the society believed that religion is "bunk." In the Soviet Russia, any opposing person was put down and possibly killed, and in Brave New World, if someone had different views, they were outcasted like Bernard Marx and John. Lenin also reminds me of Mustapha Mond in that Lenin was put in jail at an early age like Mond getting in trouble for his science and both end up leading the nation. Finally his coming to power was vaguely familiar to the way that the Brave New World Leaders came of power. First there was a revolution, and then all opposing were killed.

Benito Mussolini-
mussilini.jpg
Benito Mussolini, born in 1883 and died in 1945, was the leader of Italy from 1922 to 1943. In his earlier years in life, Mussolini lived in Italy. Later, he moved to Switzerland, becoming involved in socialist politics, and returned to Italy to work as a journalist in the socialist press. Mussolini is know for known for being the founder of Fascism. According to dictionary.com, Fascism is "a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism."

Allusions:
1. Mussolini follows the them in the novel "Everyone belongs to everyone". He had a number of mistresses and sexual relations with female supporters. In Brave New World, people have sexual relations with multiple people. On Page 57, Benito Hoover (Benito as in Benito Mussolini) is mentioned for having sex with Lenina along with other men.

2. On page 65, Benito Hoover and Henry Foster are mentioned "...men who moved through the caste system as a fish through water." Benito Hoover was an Alpha, therefore he was the highest in the caste. Outside the book, since Mussolini was a leader and many people looked up to him, he could be considered high up in the "caste system".

Allusions of Herbert Hoover to Benito Hoover:

  • Benito Hoover was always happy and didn't need to take soma:
    • "Benito was notoriously good-natured. People said of him that he could have got through life without even touching soma. The malice and bad tempers from which other people had to take holidays never afflicted him. Reality for Benito was always sunny (60)."
  • Herbert Hoover was a good person and believed in the good of the people. He was a humanitarian and he tried helping people. Like Benito, he was good natured and things did not seem to bother him.
  • Bernard envied Benito:
    • "How bitterly he envied men like Henry Foster and Benito Hoover. Men who never had to shout at an Epsilon to get an order obeyed; men who took their postion for granted...(65).
    • Many people envied Herbert like Benito. Herbert did some things during the Great Depression to loose his popularity. He believed strongly on volunteerism when the nation didn't need that at the time. Both men didn't appreciate their positions as well as they should have but at the same time, they didn't feel as if they were doing anything wrong.

Orgy-Porgy-
NurseryRhyme4.jpg

Georgie Porgie pudding and pie,
Kissed the girls and made them cry
When the boys came out to play,
Georgie Porgie ran away.

Orgy-porgy, Ford and fun,
Kiss the girls and make them One.
Boys at one with girls at peace;
Orgy-porgy gives release.

Georgy Porgy is an English nursery rhyme. It refers to the courtier George Villiers. He was the first Duke in Buckingham. Villier was good looking and got a lot of girls. King James I took George Villiers as his lover and nicknamed him “Steenie.” Steenie is a reference to St. Stephen whom, in the Bible, is described as having a “face of an angel.” King James I took Villiers as his favorite and possibly his lover. Georges had an affair with Anne of Austria, who was the Queen Consort of France. This nursery rhyme refers to that.

The people in Brave New World are very childish. Aldous Huxley took a simple and nice child's poem and turned it into something that was inappropriate that would entertain the people of Brave New World. Nursery rhymes are told to you when you are young. They are told at birth so the kids will be conditioned to think that having sex at a young age is appropriate. The Georgy Porgy rhyme is nice but the people in Brave New World wouldn’t get it. They need something more sexual so Huxley made a new version of it about sex.
